Suspect Who Shot and Wounded NYPD Officer Arrested

NEW YORK (AP) —

Police say they have arrested a Bronx man suspected of wounding a New York City police officer who responded to a large street fight in the Bronx.

Christopher Rice was arrested early Monday morning on charges of assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police say the brawl early Saturday involved guns, bats and knives. They say 25-year-old Officer Sherrod Stuart was shot in the ankle during an exchange of gunfire with Rice.

Commissioner William Bratton says Stuart returned fire, striking Rice four times. It was unclear if the 19-year-old Rice had an attorney.

Bratton says Rice had been arrested Friday night on a charge of fare beating and apparently was released hours before the brawl.

Five people from the melée were treated for stab wounds and four guns were recovered.
