Record Number of People Visit Auschwitz in 2015

Over 1.72 million people visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in 2015, establishing a new record for visitors to the site of the former death camp, reported the Auschwitz Museum on its website.

The highest number of visitors by country were from Poland (425,000), followed by the U.K. (220,000), U.S., (141,000), Germany (93,000), Italy (76,000), Spain (68,000), Israel (61,000), France (57,000), Czech Republic (47,000) and the Netherlands (43,000).

The month with the highest number of total visitors in 2015 was August, with over 210,000.

Around a million Jews and several hundred thousand others perished in Auschwitz-Birkenau, the most notorious of the Nazi extermination camps.
