Cops: Men Broke Into NYC Store, Stole 30 Fur Coats

NEW YORK (AP) —

Police are searching for three men they say stole 30 fur coats worth $25,000 from a New York City store last month.

Surveillance footage released Tuesday shows the men in head lamps ransacking Henry Cowit, Inc. and Madison Avenue Furs in Manhattan.

Police say the suspects entered the store by breaking its glass window with a brick just before 4 a.m. on Nov. 16. Investigators say the men then fled in a black, four-door sedan.

The third-generation family business specializes in pre-owned and vintage furs and claims to be the largest fur matcher in the country.

Co-owner Stephen Cowit called the robbery a “classic smash-and-grab.” He said the glass was supposed to be shatter-proof. He said an inside gate has since been installed, in addition to other security measures.
