Guinea Declared Free of Ebola Transmissions
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the end of Ebola in Guinea, commending the people and the government on the achievement.
The U.N. organization is holding a ceremony Tuesday to mark the step forward in the West African country where the worst Ebola outbreak in history started in December 2013.
Guinea enters 90 days of heightened surveillance. More than 2,500 people have died in Guinea from Ebola. It has killed more than 11,300 people worldwide, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, said this is the first time all three countries have stopped the original chains of transmission. Sierra Leone was declared free from transmissions Nov. 7. Liberia was declared Ebola-free twice, but has entered a third countdown.
