NYC Mayor to Expand Municipal Electric Vehicle Fleet
New York City plans to launch the largest municipal electric vehicle fleet in the U.S.
That’s according to Mayor Bill de Blasio, who released a statement Tuesday saying the initiative would cut municipal vehicle emissions in half by 2025.
The NYC Clean Fleet plan would replace approximately 2,000 fossil-fuel sedans with plug-in electric vehicles. The plan also expands the use of anti-idling, hybrid technologies in medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, such as sanitation trucks, and increases the use of biodiesel fuels.
De Blasio says a “cleaner, greener fleet” is yet another step toward achieving an 80 percent reduction in all emissions by 2050.
Officials say purchasing the new electric vehicles can be done without new operating expenditures. They say the additional vehicle costs would be offset by fuel savings.
