Long Island Teacher Wins $25,000 From Milken Foundation
A Long Island high school teacher has won a $25,000 prize from a foundation started by former Wall Street financier Michael Milken.
The Milken Educator Award was presented to English teacher Lauren Jensen at an assembly at Glen Cove High School. She received a standing ovation when the award was announced.
She told the assembled students that she lives and breathes teaching. She added, “You guys give my life meaning.”
Milken unveiled the prize’s dollar amount in dramatic fashion. He called six students up to the stage and handed them signs to hold up one at a time until the figure of $25,000 was on display. Milken called teaching “the most important job in this country.”
