Man Arrested for Conning Elderly Woman in Bail Scam
A Brooklyn man was arrested for scamming an 85-year-old woman out of $8,000 by saying her daughter-in-law had been arrested and needed bail money.
Emmanuel Jean-Gilles pleaded not guilty Thursday to grand larceny and possession of stolen property charges.
Authorities say the elderly woman received a phone call in July telling her that her daughter-in-law was arrested and needed $8,000 to post bail. She was told to wire the money to Jean-Gilles’ bank account.
A man then identified himself as a police detective and told her he would call a taxi so she could wire the money. Surveillance video showed Jean-Gilles withdrawing it about three hours later.
