Teen Declared Brain Dead Shows Signs of Life

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) —

The family of a 13-year-old boy who was pronounced brain dead following a fatal crash says the teen has shown signs of life.

Michael Lavecchia Sr., grandfather of Michael Lavecchia III, says he saw “Mikey” move his leg, shoulder and head Monday at a Paterson hospital.

Mikey was a passenger in a car that collided with a truck parked on the shoulder of Rt. 80 Saturday. He was pronounced brain dead on Sunday, but Lavecchia charged that a neurologist never saw Mikey before the diagnosis. The boy was kept on life support until his organs could be donated. After seeing Mikey move, the grandfather had his death certificate destroyed.

“I’m hopeful there’s a miracle in the working,” he said. “I’ve been praying for it. We all have been. That little boy — I can’t afford to lose that little boy. He was everything to me.”
