NYC Lawmakers Arrested at Capitol Rent Protest

ALBANY (AP) —

Several state lawmakers are among the dozens of people arrested after they staged a demonstration at the State Capitol to push for stronger rent control laws.

Police arrested 55 people Wednesday afternoon for blocking access to the governor’s second-floor office.

“This is to make sure the governor hears us,” said Councilman Jumaane Williams (D-Brooklyn), who was among those arrested. The others were Council members Corey Johnson and Laurie Cumbo, Assembly members Richard Gottfried, Walter Mosley, Diana Richardson and Rodneyse Bichotte, and Sens. Bill Perkins, Adriano Espaillat and Brad Hoylman.

Everyone arrested is from the New York City area. All were issued appearance tickets for Albany City Court.

The protest was held to push Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature to strengthen the law governing the rent rules in and around New York City. The current law expires June 15.
