Someone painted over the hands of a statue of George Washington in New Jersey’s capital city with red paint during the Labor Day weekend.

The statue stands on a pedestal in Trenton’s Mill Hill Park and the hands are at least 20 feet above the street.

Resident Bernice Mitchell first noted the vandalism on Saturday.

The statue was cast in Italy and was displayed at the U.S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. Trenton purchased it in 1896.
