At U.N., Syria Reasserts Claim to Golan
Lest anyone think that Syria’s catastrophic civil war has caused the Assad regime to forget its claims to the Golan Heights, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said on Monday in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly that they want the Golan back.
“The Syrian Arab Republic confirm their mission to restore the Golan Heights to Syrian rule and formally rejects all measures taken by Israel to change the geopolitical landscape of the Golan Heights,” al-Moualem said.
Al-Moualem also attacked Israel for refusing to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, saying they are “handicapping the possibility of a ‘free zone’ from weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.”
According to Israeli policy, for obvious security reasons, it will not join any such agreement until a comprehensive peace is achieved in the region.
