Rockaways to Get New Medical Clinic in 2015

NEW YORK (AP) —

The Rockaways, which lost one of its two hospitals last year, will be getting a new medical clinic. It’ll be housed in an abandoned courthouse on Beach Channel Drive, purchased by the real-estate company Harmony Group for $50,000.

The company will spend $10 million to convert it into a clinic slated to open in 2015. It will be called the Rockaway Ambulatory Surgical Center and will employ 45 people. It will offer ophthalmology, urology, obstetrics, gynecology and orthopedic care.

The 3-story limestone and marble courthouse has been closed for 40 years. The last hospital that served the area, the Peninsula Hospital Center, closed in 2012.
