Manhattan, Brooklyn Most Expensive Areas in U.S.

NEW YORK

Based on the prices of common household items, Manhattan is the most expensive neighborhood in the nation to live in, with Brooklyn coming in as number two, in a wide-ranging survey of 307 cities.

For the sixth year in a row, the Council for Community and Economic Research determined that Manhattan and Brooklyn are the costliest places to purchase everyday items.

“The [higher] housing prices … have an impact on everyone, right down the line,” Dean Frutiger, a project manager with the council, said. “The local grocer has to pay more for his property; therefore, he’ll have to charge higher to cover his expenses.”

A typical half-gallon of milk in Manhattan goes for a whopping $2.34, only 22 cents more than in Brooklyn. Gas in the Big Apple is $3.97 a gallon — about the same as in Brooklyn — and a haircut costs $22.21, compared with Brooklyn’s $13.83.

The average Manhattan rental is $3,902, with Brooklyn coming in at $2,411. To buy a house, a Manhattan resident has to fork over the seven-figure sum of $1,303,421, while Brooklynites are at a more affordable $959,907.

Queens, the largest borough in the city, comes in sixth place as the most expensive place to live. Rounding out the top five are Honolulu, San Francisco and San Jose.
