Catholics Lobby Albany on Social Issues

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) —

Catholic bishops are making their annual lobbying visit to Albany as Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Senate Republicans are starting to clash over the governor’s proposal to strengthen Roe v. Wade.

Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos calls Cuomo’s promise extremist even by the standards of other states. Cuomo disagrees, saying he would simply codify rights under the federal 1973 court decision in the event it was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York in a post from Rome says bishops will oppose Cuomo’s proposal.
