Holland Tunnel to Get More Efficient Lights

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) —

Environmentally-friendly lighting is coming to one of the main routes between New Jersey and New York City.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says it will install more efficient lighting inside the Holland Tunnel over the next several months.

The Light Emitting Diode, or LED, lighting will replace more than 3,000 fluorescent lamps inside the north and south tubes of the tunnel that connects Jersey City and New York.

The agency says the new lights will save more than $250,000 per year in energy bills and also will cut down on maintenance costs.

The work is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2013.
